Reverse/Correct Opportunities

Opportunities track potential or expected donations before they are received. They allow staff to manage pledges, planned giving, and fundraising pipelines prior to gift entry.

Donor 360 gives users the option of reversing or correcting an opportunity that has already been posted.

How Opportunities Fit Into the Process

  1. An Opportunity represents an expected donation
  2. When funds are received, a Gift is recorded
  3. The Opportunity helps track fundraising progress before the gift occurs

Here's what the process does:

  • The Reverse/Correct Opportunity feature creates a new opportunity to serve as the one to be “corrected”
  • On original opportunity, a “reversing” Allocations record is created
  • Original opportunity record type changes from “Donation” to “Cancelled/Reversed” providing a way to separate this opportunity from others. NPSP rollups to Accounts, Contacts, and Funds can be filtered by record types, thus the original gifts can be excluded from the tallies.
  • Donor 360 also excludes “Cancelled/Reversed” record type from NPSP rollups
  • A field on the GAU Allocation object, “Reversal Amount” allows for a negative currency amount
  • Display Date field is also showing with the date of reversal or original gift date.
  • Users who have the Gift Entry - Reverse/Correct Gifts Permission Set can manage this process.
    • Create this new PermSet with the indicated name, add Fund Allocation Edit, Read and Edit and Read to Reversal Amount and Suppress from Public fields; Apex Class Access add fdnp_cf1.reverseAndCorrectOpportunity_CTRL; Visualforce Page Access add fdnp_cf1.reverseAndCorrectOpportunityContainer; Custom Permissions add fdnp_cf1.Allowed To Correct Opportunity. Assign this PermSet to any user who should have ability to reverse/correct opportunities.

  • Enter the date for which the reversal/correction should be recorded to the general ledger. It will post a JE reversing the original gift as of that date.
  • Choose whether to reverse the original AND create a correcting donation opportunity, OR simply reverse the original gift
  • Enter a reason or explanation for the reversal
  • Decide whether you would want to expose the original and reversing donation externally, like on donor statements or within the donor portal
  • Click Create to proceed.
